dc.description.abstract
During 1996 and 1997 the ESCAP secretariat implemented a project aimed at assisting the least developed countries in institutional development of macroeconomic policy management and coordination. The project sought to identify the institutional constraints which inhibit the formulation and implementation of sound macroeconomic policies in a representative group of least developed countries (Bangladesh, the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Samoa), with the focus on arrangements for coordination among relevant agencies. It also surveyed the institutional frameworks as well as modalities for coordination in the Republic of Korea and Thailand, and examined their contribution to the effective implementation of macroeconomic policies. The project then drew lessons from all the experiences with the objective of strengthening the institutional mechanisms of least developed countries.
