Abstract
The overall objective of this Training Workshop is to raise the levels of awareness and understanding amongst participants of coastal hazards, in particular tsunami risk and mitigation. The workshop will address the topics and issues as described in the Revised Guidelines, “Tsunami Risk Assessment and Mitigation for the Indian Ocean: knowing your tsunami risk – and what to do about it” (UNESCO, 2015), using a modular approach.
The modular approach will largely reflect the structure of the Revised Guidelines, with a sequential treatment of the various aspects of the hazard, vulnerability and risk assessment procedures being followed by sections dealing with risk reduction through improved preparedness and mitigation. One or more case studies will be presented along with information on tools and methods appropriate to the procedures. The workshop will provide opportunities for participants to address and discuss risk assessment and management issues through their own experiences. Each session carries the alphabetical identification of its corresponding Chapter in the Revised Guidelines (A‒J). Each is intended to explain and, where feasible, provide the opportunity for practical experience of the steps involved in the assessment and management procedures. A key objective is to establish a clear understanding of the linkages in the risk assessment and management procedures as described in the Guidelines, also to explain the relevance and importance of the new knowledge that is being sought.
