dc.description.abstract
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have assumed an increasingly important role in most developing countries of the Asian and Pacific region, not only on account of their large numbers but also because of the links between SMEs and almost every aspect of the economy. Indeed, in addition to constituting the basic force for facilitating economic restructuring while activating the domestic market and expanding exports, SMEs have already made a significant contribution to employment generation. In that context, it is interesting to note that the developing countries within the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) region have, over the last 10 to 15 years, registered tremendous increases in their share of world trade, reaching about 23 percent in 1995 from just 7.6 percent in 1980. This dramatic growth in trade has been characterized by gradual diversification from raw materials and primary commodities to manufactures. SMEs have played a crucial role in shaping that trend. At the same time, there exists a widely shared perception that the development and strengthening of the capacity of export-oriented SMEs in the region would enable developing countries to take advantage of emerging opportunities in international markets.
