dc.description.abstract
In the light of the above, ESCAP, in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank organized a high-level seminar in June 1998. One objective of the seminar was to promote better and wider understanding of the causes of the crisis. A second major objective was to reflect on lessons that could be drawn for formulating policy responses to avert any serious crisis in the future. The seminar was attended by senior officials from the finance ministries, central banks and other relevant ministries and agencies representing 22 countries.

The present publication consists of papers presented at the seminar. It is hoped that it will make an important contribution to the ongoing discussions in the international community on the crisis. It should also serve as valuable reference material for policy makers
