Abstract
Since 1991 and 1992 when the Central Asian republics became members of the Economic and
Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), their governments have expressed keen interest
in integrating their countries into the technical assistance programmes of the Commission in various sectors. Through policy statements and at meetings which have taken place at recent sessions of the
Commission, the Government of Kyrgyzstan has requested that ESCAP promote foreign direct investment in the development of mining and mineral-based industries in Kyrgyzstan. The present publication, which is volume 13 of the Atlas of the Mineral Resources of the ESCAP Region, responds to that request.
The publication aims at furthering knowledge about the complex metallogeny and mineral resource potential of Kyrgyzstan resulting from geodynamic evolution and the complex tectonic and structural setting of the Tien Shan mountain system. Unlike the preceding volumes in this series, the present volume contains a brief review of the stratigraphy, magmatism and tectonics of the major structural units of the country and places greater emphasis on describing the mineral resources and potential, as well as the policy initiatives and regulatory framework for resource development.
